If there are two things that I’ve learned that don’t really go together it’s fussy eating and attending school, and I have the great privilege of a child who is both a fussy eater and attends school.
When Toby started in Reception last year we hoped beyond hope that he would see his friends eating the school lunches and that he would want to try them too. We sent him in for a full five days a week ticking all the boxes for school lunches; the menu would change every week and be on rotation every three. We naively assumed that he would just go for it, rather than being nagged by us at home to try things!
Let’s just say that by the end of his Reception year I think he was having around 2 hot lunches a week with sandwiches on the days he wasn’t – ‘Fishy Friday’ was always a winner though.
Deep down I think we knew it’d be a problem because he’s like it at home too. With my husband and I both wanting the best for our children, as any parent would – diets included – it makes our world really difficult when we feel that Toby isn’t getting as many of the vitamins as he could, or should, be. He is an incredibly active child who has a 3 year old brother who watches his every move and, although Teddy is a less fussy eater, he could be better still.
Instead of trying every method under the sun (again) to try and get Toby to eat more of a variety we’ve decided to try and complement his diet with the new Bassetts Vitamins Omega-3 + Multivitamins Orange Flavour Pastilles*. Not only are we trying to relieve some of the pressure from ourselves when it comes to stressing over what he’s eating, but also relieve some of the pressure he might feel from us to try new things. The last thing I want is Toby to feel like we’re forcing him and then he ends up never trying things because there’s some kind of mental block.
The Bassetts Vitamins Multivitamins are an easy way for us to try and get more essential Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin B5 which supports normal mental performance and Vitamin B6 which supports normal psychological function into Toby and Teddy without much more fuss than we already have*. They’re a quick, easy and tasty way to some of those essentials nutrient into both our boys. Bassetts Vitamins are incredibly passionate about supporting fussy eaters and family nutrition and with Toby going into Year One at school, and Teddy starting his second year at nursery, I want to feel like we’ve prepared them for their days of learning as best as possible and these multivitamins can only help support this.
What Did The Boys Think?
Admittedly, with Toby being a super fussy eater, he is already averse to trying new things but with a bit of encouragement he did have a good nibble at the pastilles. He enjoys the flavour and loved that they were ‘very squidgy, mummy’ but he hasn’t yet finished a whole one. This is absolutely fine by me because, as far as I’m concerned, ANY extra vitamins he’s getting from them is an achievement. I think for him it’s very much a sensory/texture thing once he’s biting into it.
Teddy on the other hand was happy to lick and nurse his until it had shrunk right down. He loves the orange flavour. I asked them both to draw a picture of what it felt like to have it inside their tummy and these are the results.
In Toby’s view they felt and tasted ‘like wibbly wobbly jelly on my green spoon, but it’s in my tummy now’. Hopefully this means the more he nibbles at them, the more he’ll be open to eating one without me using this line to actually get it in his belly!
Teddy said it was ‘like big sunshine’. So, if you were ever wondering what sunshine tasted like then apparently Bassetts Vitamins Omega-3 + Multivitamins Orange Flavour Pastilles fit the bill.
