If you’ve got a toddler, or a child of any age for that matter, then you’ll know that you can’t be without snacks. You’ll need snacks in the kitchen cupboards, in their bags when you go out, you’ll need to have them on hand in the car or when you’re walking round town because all I hear most of the time is “I’m hungry”, “I wanna eat”, “snack time, Mummy”. The problem is I’ve got one small human being who will eat anything and I’ve got an older, but still small, human being who is pretty fussy.
Sometimes it feels relentless when they ask for food because if they don’t have the same, they can get a bit narky – unless Teddy’s having a banana which Toby will absolutely not ask for! Of course this means that when I go shopping I am always trying to find new and exciting snacks that work for both the boys. Not only that, I like the snacks to try and be as healthy as possible, especially when Toby’s diet is quite limited due to his fussiness, I don’t want to continuously be feeding him rubbish.
Nairn’s recently got in touch with me to see if we’d like the opportunity to try their new Astro Bites. I’ll admit I was a little reserved at first because I thought they were just another ‘treat’ food that’d give them a sugar high and I was also a little worried that Toby would just turn his nose up at them. Oh how wrong was I?
The Nairn’s Astro Bites are space themed and this caught Toby’s attention immediately (Teddy’s not fussy, he got straight to eating them) and he was excited that he’d be getting to eat a spaceman, rockets, shooting stars and aliens – you see them theme right? It’s all in the name. Toby does what he normally does which is to give them a little sniff and put them to his lips. He even dared to bite a bit and…. he ate it. In fact, he ate the whole packet.
These little packets of kiddy goodness are made from wholegrain oats which are high in fibre and have lots of energy which is especially good because Toby and Teddy are incredibly active so they need all the energy they can get.
I know so because we eat a lot of porridge in this house. They contain 40% less sugar than the average kid’s biscuit and have no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. And, while we don’t have any intolerances in this household, they’re gluten free and suitable for coeliacs too. I love that they’ve done this because it doesn’t affect the quality or the taste of the Astro Bites but it means those with intolerances get to enjoy them just as much as the next person – let’s not forget these can totally be for adults too! It’s nice to see that the price hasn’t been inflated for those with different catering requirements too.
I know that if the boys have these then their energy levels are replenished, they’ve eaten a healthy alternative to some of the things they usually eat and they’ve enjoyed eating them. To me, you don’t need to ask much more from a snack. As long as Toby can whizz around on his bike that little bit longer and Teddy can jump on his little hopper for another half an hour, the Astro Bites have done their job!
The Nairn’s Astro Bites come in three flavours; chocolate chip (Toby’s favourite), berry and cheese which I think is a great mix of sweet and savoury (not everyone loves plain cheese). They’re rich in vitamins and minerals and the packet sizes are perfect for popping anywhere too.
But what about the adults? They need refuelling too, right? Of course we do. We are parents, snacks are our friend when we don’t get to eat a proper meal. Snacks are our go to when we need an energy boost and, quite honestly, sometimes a snack is all you need with a cup of tea or coffee when you actually get five minutes peace.
Nairn’s haven’t forgotten about the grown ups you see, oh no. The problem with all of my ‘go to’ snacks is that they’re not particularly healthy and they usually leave me feeling hungrier than before I ate them and then I feel guilty for shoving it in. Nairn’s ‘Snackers’ allow you to have the snack but without the guilt and offer much more than a small energy boost.
They’re baked, not fried, and they’re made with wholegrain oats too. The slow release energy they provide mean you feel energised for longer and just that bit more satisfied throughout the day, plus they’re only around 100 calories a bag so if you’re tracking calories, these are a goodie.
These Nairn’s Snackers also come in three flavours; cheese, sea salt and balsamic and smoked paprika. Not only are they great for on the go, they’re also great for parties and BBQs. Instead of offering the usual crisps and dips, try these with some dips because they’re so good!
While it’s nice to keep the kiddos energised and full of life, don’t think that you have to be left out! I loved all of these flavours; the cheese is so cheesy, the sea salt and balsamic vinegar have just the right balance and the smoked paprika has the perfect kick. Have you tried these yet?
You can get a 5 pack of Nairn’s Astro Bites/Snackers with an approximate RRP of £1.85 at selected retailers. If you can’t find them don’t forget to check the ‘free from’ aisle.
