It’s been 7 months since we moved into our new house and it still doesn’t really feel like home yet. Most of the decor gives off the air of the previous, older owners and, while we’ve done a few bits to try and make it more homely, we still have a long way to go.
It feels like we’ve hardly done anything even though I know progress is slow on these kinds of things. I don’t want to rush it or rush the decisions just for the sake of it. I want this to be our happy place and I want it to be absolutely right.
One place that I’m particularly keen on getting totally sorted is the ‘adult’ living room. We need new sofas, a couple of new bits of furniture, something above the fireplace and we’d like to get the TV on the wall but only after the walls have had a lick of paint. Let’s not even get on to all the small accessories that bring a room together because I don’t think I ever stop looking for things I’d love to pick up.
Exclusive Mirrors recently got in touch asking if we’d like to review one of their mirrors and I was absolutely over the moon when I came across a big mirror that would fit perfectly between the mantel piece and the picture rail. I knew I wanted a mirror above here so that I could enjoy the extra light during the day, but also for the flames of my candles to flicker away twice as much in the evenings.
The beautiful and ornate Abbey vintage mirror arrived packaged like something I’ve never seen before. Clearly Exclusive Mirrors know how to get a mirror from warehouse to home in one piece as it was in absolutely perfect condition upon arrival. I chose to have it in cream (it comes in four different colours), even though it doesn’t really fit with the rest of the furniture we have because I know those things will eventually be replaced.
We made sure it was fixed to the wall, especially since it was a large and heavy mirror, and it created an atmosphere in the living room that I didn’t know had been missing. It filled a rather large gap and created this superb focal point in the room, especially with my Willowtree ornaments, a bunch of flowers and a few candles in front of it.
The frame is thick, solid and beautifully decorated yet it still manages to sit flush to the wall; even though it gives the feeling of a huge amount more space, it takes up hardly any at all. I loved the matte finish and it felt like a high end and luxury piece, just without the massive price tag.
We have a few other mirrors around our house and I think they play a huge part in bringing spaces together, bringing light into rooms and atmosphere into specific areas. The only thing left for us to do now is redecorate the room and get the new furniture we have so been hoping for – but I won’t compromise on what we want. I’m happy to wait to find the perfect pieces, just like this mirror.
N.B Unfortunately, I came home after my dentist appointment one day to find that my mirror had totally fallen off the wall and had shattered into hundreds of pieces. I was absolutely devastated as we really loved this piece in our room. We checked the fixtures and everything was fine and still in place so it’s still a complete mystery as to how it came off the wall. Two days later our lamp randomly topped over on to the floor too. Nobody was in the room and nobody had touched it! Perhaps I have an ghost!
