Making Our House A Home | Ways To Cosy Up This Winter

It won’t be long before the dark nights are creeping over us at 3.30 in the afternoon and there’s no better time of year than to put all your summery trinkets away and bring out the real home comforts. We’re still learning a lot about our house and one of the things we’ve noticed is that this house is much colder than the last and the heat can escape pretty quickly so it’s important for us to find ways to keep warm and cosy.

Fireplace

Whether you’ve got a full open fireplace, a log burner, a gas heater or an electric fire there’s nothing better than making use of it throughout the colder months. If yours is purely ornamental then get some warm coloured lights and make a feature out of it and have a few candles surrounding it (I quite like the ones from Neom), or if it’s in working condition whack it on, shut the door and snuggle on down!

We’re really lucky to have a log burner in our new home so we’ve had a good stock of logs and kindling next to it so we can get it all toasty in the evenings. Bliss.

A Good Blanket

There’s literally nothing better than a decent blanket. It needs to be thick, woolly, totally cosy and big enough for two people although, let’s be honest, you just want to roll yourself up in it.

One thing we’ve noticed is that this house is much colder than the last and the heat can escape pretty quickly so it’s important for us to find ways to keep warm and cosy.

I have all the heart eyes for this pom pom blanket from Marks and Spencer at the moment. I love the deep Autumnal red, but I think the cream one would be perfect for year round naps on the sofa. Alternatively I’ve found this stunning shop on Instagram called ‘Woolly__Mama’ and her chunky knit throws are beyond your wildest dreams!

Switch Up Your Blinds

If you’re really looking to bring a room together this Winter then why not install some plantation blinds? We’ve got them in our house here, in almost every room, and they are a great way of bringing the room in to make it all snuggly. I’ll admit it kind of feels like you’re giving yourself turndown service but it’s so worth it – whether you opt for full height or cafe style plantation shutters.

They look stunning during the day and it mostly saves the need for any curtains too! Having plantation shutters, like these ones from Direct Blinds, brings a sense of elegance but also homeliness which is everything you want in the colder weather. They’re incredibly popular at the moment and definitely worth some consideration if you’re looking to make some super cosy changes!

Stock Up The TV Planner

There’s nothing worse than planning a night in front of the telly, snuggling down under your blanket, with your blinds closed and your fire on only to find that there’s nothing on TV! It’s always good to have a good stock of recordings on the planner so you can at least enjoy what you’re watching.

If all else fails, bring out that book you’ve been wanting to read for ages and just enjoy the peace and quiet while you feel all toasty and warm.

Cosy Pyjamas

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t scrimp on it’s pyjamas. A nice pair of pyjamas can make all the difference. I’m not saying go out and buy all the silk ones you can find but as long as you find ones that you’re comfy in, feel cosy in and can probably get away with answering the door in (it happens!) then you’re on to a winner.

  • I just love how to get ready to deal with winter. It’s like going to war and planning very well before the enemy attacks. I love using the fireplace, I always have this mentality that it is the most effective way to fight the winter cold. I am so happy that you included it in your ways of keeping warm during winter.
