Review | Natural Birthing Co ‘Cool It Mama’

If you’re pregnant, or have ever been pregnant, you’ll know that 99% of the time you are hotter than the sun! Come rain or shine, Summer or Winter, you have a beautifully built in heating system that doesn’t switch off.

We’ve had some gorgeous weather so far this April and with just 4-5 weeks to go, I’ve been feeling the heat. I genuinely don’t know how I coped being heavily pregnant at the height of summer in 2013, with Toby being born on 30th August. So, what’s a pregnant girl to do? Cool down of course.

There are lots of cooling products on the market, but none that I’ve yet used have felt quite as nice as the ‘Cool It Mama’ body spritz by Natural Birthing Co. All the products in the range are designed by midwives, specifically aimed at the pregnant woman or new mum – and of course, these midwives know what they’re talking about.

On first receiving the spritz, I immediately loved the packaging. While blue, it’s not boyish and the labelling is all very feminine – it’s definitely something that would stand out to me on a shelf. All the packaging was recyclable and it doesn’t have any waste or unneccessary extras, like a box, that you need to get rid of.

I read the instructions, as I always do, and they’re very self explanatory! It’s obviously a “one pump, one squirt” action and the mist is very direct; half of it doesn’t go floating away from you. I would recommend using 1-2 pumps on the desired area of the body as a little goes a long way. Yes, that’s right ladies, it’s not just for your face. It’s a treat for those toes and legs too so spray it all over.

Natural Birthing Co have designed this bottle of luxury for women who are suffering with the heat. The smell is amazing. It does have menthol in it but it doesn’t distract from the other lovely smells. All the ingredients are naturally derived and it reminds me of having a massage, or going to the spa. For those who are really suffering, as per a hint on the bottle, I would really suggest keeping it stored in the fridge if you’re using it at home just for that extra added cooling effect.

Once sprayed on, it doesn’t leave any residue, it isn’t sticky or oily and you don’t end up looking shiny! There’s no limit to the amount of applications you can make so you can use it from morning until night. If you’re desperate, you could even use it through the night if you need a little cooling down.

The bottle, while very generous in size, can seem quite expensive at £15.99. However, once you’ve factored in that this will last quite a while, all the ingredients are naturally derived and safe and that it’s been designed by midwives, it’s definitely worth the money. I will definitely continue to use this right up until I have my baby, and after too – especially as it will be getting hotter as the months go on.

I’m also going to make it one of my hospital bag essentials. Everyone knows hospital wards can feel like they’re at 100 degrees, and if you’re going to labour on the ward too it’s nice for your partner to give you that little spritz, instead of having to constantly cool a flannel down!

You can shop directly with Natural Birthing Co, or you can find a list of their stockists on the website too.
