Review | Bigjigs Toys Farm Train Set

When I first opened the Farm Train Set from Bigjigs Toys, I was really quite excited. It would be Toby’s first proper set of trains and track. I had to wait until Ted was asleep before I put it all together because he would otherwise just pull the whole thing apart, much to Toby’s annoyance.

There looked to be quite a few pieces, 44 as it turned out, but it wasn’t difficult to put together at all. The instructions were really simple which was great because I can’t bear it when things are fiddly or hard to understand. I was quite impressed with the solidity of the track. I knew it was wooden, but I’m always wary that’s it’s not always the solid wood some toy companies make it out to be. This is, in fact, very sturdy and very robust and will not be broken easily, if at all.

The track pieces slotted together well, although I was a little disappointed because they don’t fit that snugly which means the track is quite loose and does move around a bit, especially on the corners. I also really loved that scenery is included to place around the track – Toby’s favourite is the duck pond and every time he sees the duck he says “quack quack”. I was quite impressed that the scenery stood up well on carpet, though of course it would do better on a less squishy surface, but they certainly held their own.

The Farm Train Set offers a couple of different heights, where the bridge goes over the apple trees and this is another of Toby’s favourite bits. He likes pushing the trains up one side, and letting them roll down the other side. However, I feel the piece that joins the two hills together could be a bit longer. We find that it often falls down the middle and I’m forever fixing that piece of track, which gets annoying after doing it about 20 times in 10 minutes – on the upside, it’s a toy that’s actually getting played with!

We’ll often sit down and play with Toby, and luckily the Farm Train Set is one of the least annoying toys because you can get creative with him and it’s not noisy, unless you make it! You can tell stories, make names up for the characters in the scenery, have big crashes and even races around the track. There are lots of ideas and possibilities. You don’t even have to keep the track as it is. We’ve made miniature tracks out of the pieces so we can all play with our own bit (we’re trying to get Toby to learn how to share, as he’s not happy with Teddy playing with any toys).

The train accessories are also wooden, however the wheels are plastic and are a bit too forgiving. After playing with the set myself, it’s easy for the trains to “de-rail” and go off the edge of the track. Apart from that, I love that you can transport a hay bale and a chicken around the track on the trailing flatbeds. We’ve even had some other train friends over (Henry, Percy, Thomas and Hiro) to join in the fun on this track.

This Farm Train Set has surely become one of Toby’s favourite toys. He plays with it every day and I think it’s wonderful for his imagination and creativity. We would definitely recommend this and even consider buying it as a gift for friends.

This is so cute and I love that the trees are the bridge. I know a little boy that would love this.

This looks so good! I can’t wait until Zach is old enough for a train set, and I have high hopes of having enough pieces to build a huge track right around our living room! xx

This is a lovely starter box for a wooden train set. They do a dinosaur one too I believe and they have sets of extra track you can buy to extend. You’ll have it going through the whole house, not just the living room! Xx
