I can’t think of a single person I know that doesn’t own a sofa. And the majority of those people either have kids, or are exposed to them quite a lot. I’ve been a mum now for almost 3.5 years and I’ve been a mum of two for nearly 18 months. Both of my sofas have seen *quite* a lot of their baby sick episodes, poonami episodes, general dribble and snot episodes – you get the idea. Add into that the fact I’ll collapse home on the sofa after a sweaty game of netball and so will Jamie after a full day out at work. You can only imagine the state of it. Who knew that dark colours would show up everything?
It’s hard because, despite trying numerous products, they just don’t ever get properly clean and you always know they could do with a proper wash. I’ve tried it all; 1001, Vanish, Shake ‘n’ Vac’, Febreze, the usual. And all these products are good at one thing; hiding the smells and dirt rather than actually getting the sofas clean. I never dare wash the actual sofa cushion covers because for a start they’re an absolute nightmare to get off and back on again (why is there so much loose thread inside a sofa cushion cover?) and then you wonder if you’re just going to totally ruin them.
I don’t actually do that much housework because I just don’t get time so I love convenience, hence having a cleaner once a week. So, when an email from Johnsons Cleaners popped into my inbox a couple of weeks ago offering the chance to try out their ‘Click Clean Deliver’ service, after looking at what services they could offer, I knew the sofa cushions were exactly what I’d want doing. The actual store in our town has recently shut down and we’re so limited for any dry cleaning services too, so this couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Plus it’s always nice to get a head start on your Spring clean, right? Forget ‘new year, new me’, it’ll end up being ‘new year, clean sofa’.
So since we can’t visit a high street store, a door to door service is exactly what I need. The new Click Clean Deliver service from Johnsons allows you to have an array of household items collected from your house by courier, taken to their dry cleaning specialists in one of their locations and once they’re done, they’re couriered straight back to you. So, a professional clean with a door to door service that means you don’t even have to leave the house. I’ll definitely take advantage of that! I wish I knew about it when Ted decided to have a massive poonami all over our bed a few weeks ago and we had to stick the duvet in the bath and let it dry for almost a week.
When my sofa covers left the house I could point at all the patches and tell you where each stain or mark had come from – including the huge one on the big bit of the sofa where Jamie had spilt a whole bottle of Frijj chocolate milkshake over the sofa. Yep. I know. Worse than the kids! And there’s always one sofa that’s dirtier than the other too, right?
So how easy was the whole process? I have to admit I was really apprehensive about sending them off to begin with. I don’t know why, I don’t have any emotional attachment to the covers, but you just don’t know what they’re going to come back like. I honestly needn’t have worried.
Since I don’t have a three piece suite I opted to go for individual cushion covers and selected that eight of those be cleaned. I found it quite difficult because Johnsons don’t actually specify what a ‘cushion’ cover is. Does that meant the little cushions that come with my sofas, or did it mean the actual sofa cushion covers. There was also the option, as I say, for three piece suite covers and also just ‘sofa covers’. I’d like to see Johnsons specify exactly what’s included in these options with the little ‘i’ button that comes next to some of the others, just so that potential customers can see what the best option is. It could even be that what you want doing falls under a couple of different categories so I’d just like to see a little more clarity there.
Once you’ve selected what you’d like, you’re able to add special instructions if you wish; maybe there’s a particularly dirty mark that you’d like them to focus on, or maybe there’s an area to be wary of in case of plucks or pulls, that kind of thing. When that’s all done, head to the delivery page where you’ll be able to select a convenient date for them to come and pick up your goods. There are two brilliant things about this; one is that you’ll get an hour time slot texted to you the morning of the collection so you don’t have to wait in all day like some other companies will, and secondly for both delivery and collection it’s only £6! As a side note, I would suggest registering first for ease of address, recurrent orders etc..
You should then get an email to confirm your order from Johnsons Cleaners, which came through really quickly. It asked me to have my furnishings packed up in a polythene bag ready for collection and to print off a collection summary which would also need to go into the bag. Now, I didn’t have time to get to a printer so actually I just wrote mine out by hand and popped it in and this was just as good, although I would highly recommend printing if you can. We just didn’t have any ink in ours and the collection was due before we’d be able to get any ink!
So Monday came and I had all my covers in a black bin bag ready to go when I received both an email and a text confirming my one hour slot. The couriers turned up, got me to pop the bin bag into a special container, I signed for it and off he went into the sunset with my sofa cushion covers. The only problem I had now was keeping my actual cushions clean for a week. Johnsons Cleaners endeavour to return your items to you within a week but sometimes it may take longer. In the meantime, I had to cover the sofas in blankets and Jamie actually commented on how they were much more comfortable than the actual covers – although I had to break it to him that they would be coming back.
It was then that I had a text on Thursday saying that my items were ready for delivery the next day, and that I’d receive another hour time slot in the morning, which I did. The items arrived boxed and in a polythene bag with a note from the person who had packaged them up.
I loved the honesty of the company in that I was told that some marks still remain; although they’re very, very small and you wouldn’t notice unless you looked close enough! It also told me that further treatment may damage the pile of the covers which is always worth knowing. When I got them out and, finally, got them back on, they just looked so clean. I could definitely tell the difference. There were no funky smells, no weird marks and certainly no chocolate milkshake that I could see, so it was a huge success. And to think we only had to go a few days without them too.
The whole process from start to finish was painless, easy, simple and total value for money. The communication on the Click Clean Deliver service was second to none. They kept me informed almost every step of the way and I love the one hour time slots. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to family and friends who are looking for a fuss free way of getting their awkward home furnishing items cleaned. The only thing that I could find that was negative was having to cut out the red tags they stick inside the cushion with the purple labels for return purposes. Having to cut out eight lots of these was a pain but it was totally worth it.
I think when the big Spring clean hits I’ll be sending off our kitchen curtains. Well done Johnson Cleaners, you may have taken my local store but you’ve saved it with the Click Clean Deliver service.
