I’ve often heard parents talk about how easy it is for their child to escape from their highchair or pushchair. We forget that children will do lots of things to do the whole Houdini act of getting themselves out of something, especially if they don’t want to be there in the first place.
Typically, on most harnesses, the buckle is located relatively close to the lower area of the body, leaving lots of room at the top for toddlers to wriggle their way out of the top, even when you think it’s pulled tightly!
Una, a mum of 2, came up with a solution – BeltUpKidz. It’s a retrofit buckle that attaches to the harness, slightly above the armpit, and stops your child being able to take their arms out no matter how flexible they are! It’s designed to be used on everything from pushchairs, highchairs and some trikes too.
It’s an adjustable device to allow for a comfy fit across the chest and comes with two ‘wraps’ to deter the toddler from trying to undo the buckle. There’s a blue dinosaur for the boys, and a pretty pink princess for the girls!
Upon trying to fit the device I actually found it really difficult, but you are told this on the information leaflet provided. At least it means the kids won’t be able to remove the device from the harness. I made a rather silly mistake and ended up putting the buckle on back to front – it should resemble a ‘V’ shape once fitted on and unfortunately mine was upside down. This was more due to me being a novice at fitting it, but I have since rectified my technique.
Toby was quite taken with the dinosaur cover at first, probably because it was new, but he soon forgot about it which is great because he wasn’t focusing on what he could do with it! It doesn’t restrict your child’s movement in any way either, so they can still eat their food or play with their toys.
The BeltUpKidz is suitable for children who are able to sit up unaided to around 4 years old (9-36kg) and retails at £11.99. It’s a compact, light and portable product. It also makes you wonder why you didn’t think of it first? It’s so simple and easy to use.
