Making Our House A Home | The Garden Part Two

Work on our garden starts a week tomorrow (hurray!) and the work we’re getting done isn’t about the aesthetics, it’s all about making sure the kids have somewhere they can play without the constant threat of falling on a metal post holder! It’s about us having a space we can use this summer if the weather ever gets better. A space that we don’t mind opening the patio doors to in the morning. It’s just about creating a basic, but safe, environment that we can all enjoy.

Last year we had a couple of electrical points in the garden removed as we weren’t sure whether they were still live or not, and Toby was always very curious about them so we decided they had to go. We’re having a couple of vegetable patches removed too; admittedly these are nice things to have but when you don’t have the time to clean the house, you don’t really have time to grow carrots and onions and they just seem to take up a big space in the garden that could be much more functional. Add to that the sharp corners, the odd screw or nail sticking out, plus a random patch of gravel, they have to go!

The second part of the job is removing quite a wide border to the right of the garden, which used to hold lots of ‘reedy’ type plants and an awful thorny bush which we’ve since removed, but in their place it’s been overrun with weeds. In the space of the border we’re having some fresh lawn laid, yay! There’s a similar border to the back but this is only going to be halved, with some shingle over the top, and we’re going to have a potted herb garden. I still want the boys to grow things in the garden and herbs are one of the easiest things ever, much easier than flowers for sure.

We’re also going to be getting some outdoor toys. I’d really love one of those big ‘Connect 4’ games as I think Toby will love it, and I’d love to get some of the foam play mat pieces. We’ve already got a sand and water table, but a Little Tikes rocker would be good too. We’re also actually considering some kind of wendy house, but we want something super safe and durable. We’ve been looking at some options and think we might build our own, and Simply Plastics offer something a little alternative.

This basically removes all of the “safety” issues we have within the garden and hopefully we won’t have to think of places to get outside when the weather is nicer, we can just get a chair or two outside, and get some games out and it will super lovely to have some outdoor family fun without actually having to drive somewhere. Let’s just hope we can salvage what’s left of the grass. I’ve bought some Evergreen, so fingers crossed it works.
