Some of you may have seen that as much as we love trying to sit and read with Toby, that he is a mighty wriggler and if he can’t in fact bend it back and break it, he isn’t interested in reading the book. However, this doesn’t stop us from buying him new books to try, nor does it stop us from reading out loud to him even if he’s pretending to be busy with something else! You will have also seen that I love anything personalised or handcrafted, or pretty, or just generally lovely. So when I was given the opportunity to review the My Given Name book, I thought it would be something that Toby might like to listen to, even if he’s not ready to read it just yet – which is perfect as it’s aimed to be read by 3-8 year olds. It also makes a really beautiful keepsake, especially if you get the hardbound one.
My Given Name is designed to be personalised about your child. The front cover has their name on it, we managed to fit both a first and middle name on and the book is written about how your child’s name came to be their name! Using different animals for each letter of the name, along with a characteristic or words of positivity, it spells out their name. At the end there is a birth certificate which also has their family name on it.
The book was created with the aim of providing something truly personalised to children with a few added extras. Not only a nice book to read, but something that contains positive messages hoping to have a positive effect on their lives. The words used in the book, they hope, will help you and your child feel better and creative positive attitudes and thinking patterns.
Kevin Tyler has done a fantastic job in creating and writing this story, and the illustrations by Pushan Chakravarty are beyond amazing. No detail has been spared and it’s something the kids will want to look at, as well as read. The colours are amazing, and the fonts are really easy to read, and don’t clash with any of the pictures at all.
Both Jamie and I have read the book, which is longer than normal, I think due to us using both a first and middle name, and found that it was really engaging with good messages being conveyed. Not only do you get to personalise the book with your child’s name, you can personalise their character in the book. You can choose the gender of the character, and also their ethnicity, something that I have never seen done before. It’s a fantastic way to encompass other ethnicities and cultures and get kids to become more accepting of other peoples views, looks and ways of life.
Another amazing thing about this book is that you can get to preview the whole story before you buy it. If you go to My Given Name and enter your details on the first page, and hit preview, within seconds your book is showing with your child’s name, characters and all, ready for you to see the story behind your child’s name.
It really is a gorgeous book and I would highly recommend to anybody to either get it as a present either for your own kids, or for someone you know as a keepsake. You won’t be disappointed and it’s something they can keep on reading as and when they like, but with the educational element of also helping to spell out their name!

I’d be putting my nieces name on it (or one of them, then ordering another for the other one) – they’ve been under a lot of stress over the last year, with social services taking them into care and now they’re moving to live with my mum long-term, with her being their legal guardian. It’s a cross-country move for them, with a lot of big changes, and my mum is basically starting from scratch in terms of getting them kitted out with everything they need. Given the changes they’ve been facing over the last year, I think it would be really meaningful for them to have a book like this, that reinforces the idea that they are loved and wanted and special. In addition to this, I’ve already bought them the children’s book, I Love You Near Or Far, which helps young children come to terms with family living far away from them. That’s a great book, but this would be a marvellous addition to their set of bedtime stories, to help them feel at home with my mum. And I know it’d make my mum cry to know I’m thinking of her and doing everything I can to support her in meeting their specific needs.
