We’ve kind of been leaning towards potty training Toby. He’s shown some signs, especially with his speech coming on in leaps and bounds. He says things that sound like ‘I need a wee’ and ‘I need a poo’, but I’m not sure if these actually mean anything to him yet, although I’m pretty sure I do keep underestimating his understanding at the moment.
He likes to sit on his potty and he does pretend to strain for a wee but nothing actually ever happens. Until yesterday..
Usually after the boys have had a bath they get a little bit of naked time, just to run around and dry off. And last night was no different. Jamie, Toby and Teddy were all messing around on Toby’s bed when Toby started trumping. Naturally, we found this really funny and so he kept trying to force them out. It obviously got to the point where he had no wind left and he then shot off the bed pretty quickly.
The next thing I hear is water hitting plastic and I’m literally wondering to myself what the hell it is. I turn around and Toby is standing over his potty, holding his little boy’s bits, aiming and having a wee. A STAND UP WEE.. IN HIS POTTY!
I’m laughing in shock and glee, telling Jamie to look at what he was doing. He then finished and tried to pick it up, which we luckily managed to get out of his hands pretty quickly, and made a huge fuss of him! Lots of clapping and cheering and words of praise. It literally came out of nowhere, I couldn’t quite believe it had happened.
We’re always really encouraging when it comes to the potty as he really detests having his bum changed at the moment – kicking and thrashing around. He wasn’t interested at first; standing in it or putting it on his head, but something must have clicked last night. So, the question is, do we start potty training?
I need your hints, tips and potty training essentials! Go!
Ahh its such an exciting and hard time. I was mostly excited about the amount of money I was going to save from not buying nappies. If you do decided to go with it though make sure you take a potty everywhere with you. Don’t think oh ill put a nappy on for the car journey as it will confuse him. Pants all the way and it will involved lots of stopping off and potty stops xx
It certainly sounds like he is making a start and I think it is best that we follow our kids when it comes to potty training.
I think you’re off to a good start there! It’s easy to underestimate how much they understand. My first was using the potty from 4 months old and it took literally 5 days for her to do all #2’s in the potty forever more! She was 100% dry day and night by 20 months old when her little brother was born. We thought she was a fluke (we never planned to introduce the potty early) but by the time our son was 5 months we were sure we were noticing his ‘cues’ so we sat him on the potty too – since the 7th day, all #2’s have been on the potty! So they do understand. We never took our daughters nappies away until they were dry all the time. So no accidents ever happened. She just prefered not being in a soiled nappy (I guess I would too!) So figured it all out in her own time. Our son is 10 months old now and points to his nappy when he’s weeing lol. We put him on potty when he wakes up, after eating and before and after bath time. Basically when we would be going to the toilet. Good luck 😉
Oh good luck. Sounds like the start… Maybe try a day of naked bum time and see how often he wants to use it? We did that at 23 months and by 2 weeks M was dry during the day and at 25 months dry at night.
Ahh thanks lovely! We’ll try a naked bum day a the weekend and see how it goes. Toby is way past 23 months haha, he’s almost 3! Fingers crossed we get somewhere soon xx
