Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, I’ve made no secret of that, but I think the biggest thing that makes it as special as it is for me is family and that’s become even more apparent since having my own children. As they’re getting older we’re creating our own traditions as well as adopting some older ones and one thing I’ve had, probably every year since I was born, is an advent calendar.

Over the years advent calendars have become somewhat chocolate focused although this year seems to be a big turning point in terms of what you’ll find behind your cardboard door. Not only that, we seem to be moving away from typical perforated paper doors to things that are a lot more modern. 1. Fill each one with a Christmas activity; e.g. drive around to see the lights, make Christmas cookies, write a letter to Father Christmas.
2. Sample sized beauty products.
3. Fill up a hamper and stick a raffle ticket on each item, place the second raffle ticket in your advent, what will you get today? This works great with books for the younger ones too!
4. Pick a theme they love (Disney, Star Wars, Lego) and find small toys that fit the theme.
5. You can’t go wrong with chocolates can you?
