Choosing a new vehicle is always a tough decision for a driver, and not just because it’s a lot of money to spend. You need to choose a vehicle that fits your lifestyle; personal needs, preferences, daily routines, the amount of space and so on and so forth. This post gives you a few tips on how to go about choosing a car that ticks all your boxes and will be a great investment.
We’ve recently had to get rid of our Mini Cooper because, being a family of 5, having a car that only really has 4.5 seats was a squash and a squeeze to say the least. It worked well for a run around from A to B round town, but it even got too small to transport all of my netball coaching equipment so we decided we needed to do a little bit of an upgrade – certainly in terms of space offered.
Assess Your Daily Requirements
First, you need to assess your daily requirements. Consider your daily driving habits, especially distance travelled, the typical number of passengers, and the kind of roads that you will be using. For instance, if you often drive in urban areas, a compact car might be more suitable, whereas larger families may require an SUV or estate car. By working out your daily requirements, you can decide on a category or two of vehicles that will be a good fit.
We looked at a few options – everything from an Audi to a Tesla, looked at boot space as that is a big one for us, and just generally whether it would work for our family. With 3 boys, and both Jamie and I, doing sports coaching sessions we needed something that was going to fit us in as a family, or at least one of us with all the equipment that goes backwards and forwards.
We also considered the distance to the boys’ school, fixtures we’d be needing to attend and what we would be willing to compromise on to ensure the comfort and fit was right for all of us.
Consider Fuel Type & Efficiency
You should also consider the fuel type that will be best, factoring in environmental impact, fuel costs, and available infrastructure. The options include petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric – each type has benefits and drawbacks to weigh up. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in the UK with a growing network of charging stations. However, if you frequently undertake long
journeys, a hybrid or efficient petrol/diesel car might be more practical.
We already had an electric VW car and we have always been able to get where we need to go, long or short distances, without any trouble. We always plan our charges ahead if we can and marry them up with service station breaks if necessary. We were keen to stick with electric for several reasons and this is what we opted for in the end.
Evaluate Ownership Costs
The price of the vehicle is obviously an important consideration, but you must also factor in the ownership costs. There are numerous costs associated with car ownership, including insurance, road tax, fuel, and maintenance. These can vary significantly depending on the type of car you drive, so you need to make sure that any vehicle will comfortably be within your monthly budget, or that you at the very least have a sinking fund that has enough money to fund anything the car might require.
Prioritise Essential Features & Technology
There are a number of features and technologies that can greatly enhance your driving experience, comfort, and safety. Advanced driver-assistance programs, like adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring, can improve safety, while infotainment and connectivity will be key for those who need to stay connected and use navigation systems.
Finally, comfort amenities like plush interior materials, climate control, and adjustable seating can make a big difference to the experience for the driver and passenger. If you drive in adverse weather conditions you want to choose a car with reliable tyres and stability control systems.
It’s really about finding something that suits you and your family and the information above should help you tick a few boxes, or at the very least consider what boxes you want to tick and what you’re willing to compromise on.
It is important that you find a vehicle that will be a good fit so that it can seamlessly integrate into your daily routine and make driving a breeze. By focusing on your daily requirements, the fuel type, ownership costs, and features and technologies, you can find a car that ticks all of the boxes and gives you many happy years of motoring.
