Most people tend to have a typical ‘banister’ in their house, whether it goes all the way up the stairs or whether it just stretches across the landing, there’s usually always something. Our one goes up the stairs and carries on around the landing, and it’s pretty rubbish to be fair. It’s something we have considered painting, but also something we’ve considered partly removing.
It’s made of wood, which seems to be the go to for traditional balustrades but what other alternatives are there, and could they add value to your home? Our banister doesn’t have any outstanding feature of any kind and I don’t think they’re particularly quality either. I’ve seen lots of new and modern homes with cast iron balustrades or fancy glass spindles.
At the moment that doesn’t really feel practical for us since we have two very young children but it’s definitely something I’d like to consider in the future – or maybe glass would be much safer than wood, I don’t know. Either way I’m much more of a traditionalist when it comes to homely things and think, even if given the choice, I’d still stick with wooden balustrades. I just think they offer a depth to the home that glass or cast iron can’t and think I’d find it easier to sell a home on if it was less ‘quirky’ or ‘clinical’.
