Lifestyle | What I’d Really Do With A Lottery Win

If we’re being honest, we’ve all spent at least an hour in the bath dreaming of what it’d be like to win the big one. You know what I’m talking about – a big lottery win. It’s so easy to say that you’d just spend loads of money on loads of different things and sure, when I was 18, that’s definitely what I would’ve done but my ideas are so much different now. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t play the lottery because I have a weekly ticket, so at least I’m in with a chance, but what would I really do with all that dosh?

Keep it Anonymous

There’s just absolutely no chance of me going public with a win like that. Lots of people I know say they would because it’s about being transparent and unable to hide it, some of them want to show it all off and others just because. But me, I’d be quite happy to not have my face sprawled across the papers. I don’t want people coming out of the woodwork because it’s inevitable that’s exactly what’d happen. I’d tell our very, very close friends and family, but would otherwise prefer to remain anonymous. I’m under no illusion that it will eventually get out, and I’m ok with that, but I’m not going to be the one to announce it to the world.

Go On Holiday

This is probably the first thing I’d actually do. Two weeks away can do wonders for you without having to think about a lottery win, but a holiday would certainly give you some time away to think about exactly what’s just happened and what you’re going to do with it. I’d like to go somewhere relatively remote with Jamie and the kids and just enjoy being us until we came back. You know, I’ve always wanted to go to Bora Bora!

Approach an Independent Financial Advisor

Money doesn’t last forever and of course I’d love to ensure that a lottery win “sets us up” for life, but also continues to provide for our family in the future. I’m really lucky to have an incredible IFA in the family and would be taking our small fortune to him to deal with. It could mean that we’d be able to live off of the interest once we’ve paid out for things that we’d like and it also means I have someone I can trust to do exactly what’s right for us.

Build Or Renovate A House

Oh this is our dream right now! We would love nothing more than to find the perfect plot of land and build a house that’s perfect for us and our family. I think we’d definitely stay in Norfolk – we grew up here, we love it here and it’s the perfect place to raise a family. If we couldn’t find a plot of land which, believe it or not, is pretty hard to come by in Norfolk, then we’d love to buy somewhere and totally renovate it. Ooh the Pinterest boards I could create for that! Plus I’d move all my blogging buddies into our own little commune.. look out girls..

Help A Brother Out!

Be it my actual brother or anyone in our families or circle of friends, I’d love to make sure the people we love also benefit from our good luck. It could be paying off their mortgage, it could be setting up a trust fund for their kids, it could be sending them on a trip of a lifetime, just something that we could do for them. Equally, charitable donations would be something we’d look into.

Create A Sensible Shopping List

Obviously the house would be top of our lists, but we’d probably also like a new car each. I definitely don’t want five different cars sitting on a huge drive way that never get driven, just one would be fine for me since that’s what I manage perfectly fine with now. I’d also really love to have a nice wardrobe full of clothes – I don’t mean designer, I’d be quite happy to stick to high street stores, but I have one of those wardrobes where “I’ve got nothing to wear” and it just needs a massive overhaul and update to be honest.

Plan For The Future

My number one priority is making sure our boys are set up for the future. Whether it be putting money aside for school fees, driving lessons, a deposit on a house, without a doubt we’d love to be able to provide that for them. What I don’t want is to give them everything and they want for nothing. I think I’d also like to plan for all of our retirements, even though that’s years off yet, it’s definitely something I’d love to have in place.

Have A Good Splurge

What’s the point in winning it if you’re not going to spend it? Once we’ve done all the “sensible stuff” I’d love to just have that huge shopping spree, that random weekend to Rome and possibly an interior designer to work with on our dream house with some incredible pieces of furniture. The things we normally wouldn’t ever get to do and we may as well enjoy it!

Travel, Travel, Travel

There are so many countries I’d love to visit, so many cultures I’d love to soak up and so many places I’d love to take the boys to explore. I think we’d probably spend all of the school holidays travelling. So much education can be gotten from travelling, something you can’t get from a classroom, although that’s not to say we don’t want them to have a good education because we do. But travelling is something I’ve only really dipped my toe into and believe me, I want to free dive into it!

Create An Amazing Blog

Despite my blog being one of my sources of stress, writing it is something I just don’t think I could give up now I’ve started. The people I’ve met, the friends I’ve made, the opportunities I’ve been giving thus far won’t allow me to stop.

I’d love to hire people to take amazing photos, create an amazing layout and do all the SEO but I would keep full control of the content. I would still want it to be mine rather than it have this feeling of mass production with the input of 10 different people with 10 different ideas.

What would you do? Someone has to win it eventually, who’s to say it can’t be me or you? Would you be as sensible as me, or would you be a little more carefree and see how long the money lasts?
