Review + Giveaway | Foame Voyages

Toby and Teddy are both similar in that they like to construct things. I’m not talking arts, crafts and using the materials out of the recycling bin, oh no (though they do like to do that too!). I’m talking blocks, bricks and construction sets.

It’s really hard to find something that both of them can play with at the same time. Even though the age gap between them is 20 months, I think you can really tell when it comes to being able to follow instructions in the little booklets that come with a lot of the sets. Often I can find that one of them will find there are too many pieces, when the other is more than capable and doesn’t find it a challenge.

I was recently sent the new ‘Voyages’ set from Foame, and I honestly thought it’d be just another set of foam material things that they could, and would probably, ruin. I do like to be proven wrong occasionally, and this is one of those times. As soon as the set arrived I thought I’d have a good nose at it myself to see what Foame was all about. It’s the sturdiest foam I think I’ve ever come across, and that’s meant as a total compliment.

A lot of the foam toys/letters/numbers we’ve had in the past have been easily prone to dents and don’t last very long. They’ve always ended up as last resort bath toys, and then have gradually found their way to the bin because they’re so flimsy. The Foamë set in comparison is seriously good quality, and while I can almost guarantee they’ll end up as bath toys somewhere along the line the pieces aren’t going to end up in the bin any time soon and they certainly aren’t going to be a last resort.

Voyages Foame Construction Set

The Voyages Foame set, retailing at £30, comes in a handy storage bag (hallelujah!) and the best bit is that it has two suckers so you can hang it up in the bathroom if you want to drain the pieces without leaving them in the sink.

The booklet enclosed has lots of different configurations for the pieces and I think the designers have done a brilliant job coming up with some better ideas than a basic boat; think Viking ship and surfer dude.

Teddy and I played with these for about an hour the first time we got them out, and he came up with one of his own creations (don’t even ask what it was, because I couldn’t tell you and neither could he) and loved fitting the pieces together in an entirely different way which I thought was great. Personally, I had fun making as many surfer dudes as I could.

By far the best bit about this Foame construction set is that if you do manage to leave anything out on the floor, you won’t need a swear box nearby if you step on a piece. It just gives you a subtle tickle on the bottom of your foot to let you know it’s there, and you can pop it back in the bag without swearing and saying “ow” over and over. Goodbye little hard bricks!

I love that Foame encourage and enhance children’s imaginations; the boys came up with stories for their creations and then merged their ideas together to come up with this whole new world of people and their voyage vessels.

I’m really, really impressed with this set and I think Ted is keen on getting one of the other sets to go with it – there are three sets all together. If you’re looking for something a bit different for a present, then this set is aimed at children 3+, but would work for children who are older (Toby is almost 6) and I will highly recommend it. Even I really enjoyed sitting down with the boys and seeing what I could make with the pieces.

So far I can’t really find too many faults with the product. One thing I would say, and it isn’t necessarily a fault, is about the small little pieces you sometimes have to pop out. There really isn’t a secondary use for them unless you want to fill in the small, square holes and they can be fiddly to keep track of, so look out for that.

The other thing is that, because they’re foam, and it’s nothing to do with the design of the pieces, they don’t sit square. This is only really a problem if you like nice, clean lines. You won’t get that with this product, there will be gaps where pieces have joined together but it doesn’t hinder the construction of anything and it’s certainly not noticeable unless you’re really looking for it.

Other than that, the product itself is fantastic and we’ll definitely be expanding our collection!
