I don’t know about you but year in, year out we always seem to fork out on birthday cards. I have quite a big family and  can go a couple of months without buying cards to having to buy about 15 different ones in just one month.

It really is the thought that counts when it comes to buying cards but I know that when I was younger, I read the card in front of my parents to make it look as though I was bothered, but we all know you’re just waiting for that tenner to fall out of the bottom when you open it. The card then gets put on the mantlepiece to be forgotten about for a week and then it usually ends up in the bin.

Dan from Hatch Cards developed a range of children’s greetings cards that come to life using a free app called Zappar. The idea came after watching his daughter do exactly what I’ve just explained above. He decided to create a range of augmented reality greetings cards (a posh way of saying they come to life!) so that those cards, having been lovingly chosen, weren’t just tossed aside.

We’ve already sent one of our Hatch Cards off to someone in our family, and she loved it; the favourite bit being the free games that come as part of the card. The selection of cards in the range, while limited to only 11 designs, is good. There’s a card for everyone and I love that there are also non gender specific cards to choose from. Sometimes a girl just doesn’t want pink! Having said that, I would like to see more designs come to life in the future.

They’re well made and sturdy which is nice as some cards can be pretty flimsy and lifeless. At £2.99 they are a little bit on the expensive side, but they are a premium card and when you consider the extra interaction the kids will get from them, I think it’s probably worth paying a little bit extra! Hatch Cards are nice and vibrant, very simple in design, but very effective. We were pretty impressed with these.
