Review | Mud Party Board Game

I think buying new board games is very dependent on the age of your kids and how well they’re able to understand rules. Sometimes it’s nice to spend time teaching them rules and something new, and other times you just need something that you can whip out of the cupboard that’s easy, has minimal set up but still captures them. Tactic’s new game ‘Mud Party’ is exactly that. It’s super simple, family orientated and one of those games you can just get on and play without a whole load of preparation before you’ve even started.

With Christmas coming up it’s kind of traditional for us to get a new game both for the adults and the kids – I seem to buy one every year anyway. I’m not sure what the adults will be playing but to get some fun going in the evening I think Mud Party will be just grand.

How To Play Mud Party

The aim is simple – get your character around the board first. All you need to do is drop the pig into the mud pool and hope that at least 1 of the 4 mud tiles makes it out and lands on a beach towel that’s the same colour as your character so you can move forward. There are 4 characters in total; two cows and two bulls dressed particularly athletically.

The game board is double sided so you can choose whether you want a shorter or longer game which means it’s perfect if you’re short on time or your children have a short attention span.

Dropping the pig into the mud pool might seem easy at first but it actually requires a little bit of strategy. You’ll see on the instruction leaflet that there are ways to make the mud splash out of the pool and dropping it directly on top isn’t an option – no spoilers here though. You’ll need to think about where the tiles might land because if you land on someone else’s beach towel, they’re the ones who move forward.

Thoughts On The Game

This is a 3D game that requires a bit of logic and a bit of skill. It’s a good introduction to get kids thinking about how to get the best possible outcome for them and their character. The age is suggested as 5+ but Teddy, who’s 4, has really enjoyed playing along with us so it’s definitely only to be used as a guide.

It’s a beautifully illustrated and colourful game with no requirements for batteries which, in my eyes, is always a bonus. As I mentioned above, it’s minimal in its set up and it’s good fun. Because it’s a strategic game there is scope to amend rules as you see fit to avoid arguments or tantrums if you need to, but we didn’t have any – thankfully.
