The sleep experts over at Adjustable Beds have teamed up with world leading dream interpreter Ian Wallace, to find out what actually goes on with children when they sleep. Their dreams are explained! The long and short of it is that the crazy stories that our children sometimes come up with about their dreams actually have a real life implications.
I find this kind of thing fascinating because I’ve always been a heavy dreamer. I dream a lot and I dream vividly. I still remember some of the dreams I had as a child, especially one that, bizarrely, re-occurred every Wednesday night for weeks. I’ve phoned people while dreaming and had real life conversations as I’ve actually picked the phone up and dialled their number. I’ve woken up in terror because I thought I’d caused an accident in my dream and it had killed a relative. Others have just been downright weird and if I tell my husband what happens in my dreams he just looks at me as though I’m making it up. But honestly, I don’t have the imagination!
So, children! What do they dream about? Whether they’re getting a full night sleep in a new bed (please, Lord, if you’re real, please make my children sleep through the night simultaneously, because if one isn’t awake, it’s the other!) or whether they’re falling asleep on you, or the sofa, our children’s dreams tell us so much about their minds. Whatever stage my children are at, I’ve always wondered what they dream about. When they’re asleep as babies and their sucking reflex is going, are they dreaming about milk? When they move their little fists around, are they fighting off other babies? When they’re toddlers and you hear them laughing in the middle of the night, you can’t help but giggle yourself because you wonder what’s making them laugh so much? It’s crazy to think that they might be dreaming about things they’ve not yet really come across, or have only had a fleeting encounter with. I can’t wait until Toby is talking enough to be able to explain his dreams to me. At the moment his thing is ‘big.. stripy.. tiger’ and his imagination is just getting started as he’ll tell me the tiger is out by the cars, which is just wonderful, albeit a bit scary at the same time!
I wonder if my boys will be a crazy dreamer like me? Or whether it will just open up a whole other level of imagination for them. I can’t wait to find out.
