Toby’s bedroom was first, and last, decorated when we moved into our house, which is now almost 3 years ago. In the next month or two, we are going to be moving him to a bigger bedroom to allow Teddy to have Toby’s old bedroom so they both have plenty of space for their toys – which will hopefully free up my living room, which usually looks like a Hamley’s set up.
I have so many ideas about what kind of things I’d like to see in Toby’s bedroom. He’s no longer a baby, but he is still my little boy, so I want it to be colourful and fun for him; somewhere he wants to go and play, but it also needs to be practical to allow for when he’s growing up and until we feel he’s ready to have a “new room” again.
Storage
This is one thing that is paramount to getting this room right. We really need the storage for toys, clothes, books and other little bits that little boys have lying around! All we really need is a chest of drawers, a new bed, potentially with more storage underneath, and finally some kind of toy storage.
I’d really love some shelves on the wall so that we can display the books rather than hiding them. Hopefully this will encourage Toby to get more books out than we already do, but also it will bring some colour into the room. I love the idea of changing the books round when there are things on the calendar coming up. A shelf full of Easter books, birthday books, potty training books and Christmas books too!
Walls
I’d love to have the back wall of Toby’s room wallpapered. I keep finding lots of monochrome wallpaper, but I’d really love it to have a splash of colour every now and again just to tie the room together. Alternatively, I’d love to have a collection of framed quotes, pictures and maybe a banner. I love the geometric shapes on these two.
Bed
I wouldn’t mind Toby having a mid-sleeper, so there’s space to play underneath, but I think I’d prefer a cabin bed. I think if we’re going to buy him a new one it ought to be a single bed now, since he will no sooner be out of a toddler bed, than we’d end up having to buy a new one anyway. This way it will last us right through (hopefully) until he’s a really big boy and moves to a double. I love this Pilgrim bed from Great Little Trading Co, although I’d probably end up painting the drawers underneath.
Accessories
Oh, there are so many accessories that I’d love to have but I’d end up with accessory overload I think! Toby already has a really lovely tipi that I want to get up full time in his room. At the moment it lives in the corner of the living room folded up, and only comes out every now and again. I’d love to get some lights to go round the top and some cushions and a rug to go inside. I’d also love to have a brightly coloured Eames chair to bring some colour to the room as well as all the other little bits. I’ve seen some gorgeous night lights, some tape that looks like car track and a chalkboard. I think I’m going to have to rein myself in!
Blinds & Curtains
I’ve been looking for the perfect blinds for Toby’s room. At the moment they’re really annoying venetian blinds that collect dust like there’s no tomorrow. I’ve found the perfect combination with VELUX Blinds. They have a blackout blind, which we definitely need and I love it in this dark purple colour, which I think will perfectly complement the room. You can configure the blinds to your requirements and I think they’re very reasonably priced. It will provide insulation to the room when needed, and keep the heat out if you need that too.
