We’re still in the depths of winter and it’s still super tempting to close the door and snuggle up indoors until spring’s here. So, why not do just that – and invite your friends to join you? While you may usually catch up over dinner and drinks like I did last week, swapping a night out for a night in offers the perfect opportunity to chat in the comfort of your home. If you’re planning a night in with friends and looking to create a relaxing and memorable evening, here are five steps to help you plan the ultimate cosy catch up.
Prioritise Comfort
Before you invite everyone to your house, encourage your friends to dress in their favourite slouchy clothes. Loungewear or an old pair of joggers are all welcome. I wouldn’t even bat an eyelid if you turned up in your pyjamas.

One of my friends always brings her slippers come sunshine or snow. This is all about feeling relaxed indoors. Nobody wants to get their feet up on the sofa squeezed into a pair of jeans.
Create the Perfect Ambience
Arrange your seating. Whether it’s a plush sofa or a few beanbags scattered around, ensure that everyone has a place to unwind. To add to the ambience you can adjust the lighting to a warm, inviting glow: think soft lamps, fairy lights, and scented candles for a touch of elegance – no ‘big light’ here.

To complete the look, incorporate soft furnishings like cushions, blankets, and throws. These will give the space a welcoming, homely vibe. You could even have a playlist filled with laidback music that you can have on in the background.
Curate Your Entertainment Selection
Introduce some entertainment to your evening. Is it just a ‘catch up on the gossip’ kind of night? Is it a movie night? Or if they love something more interactive, why not arrange a themed quiz night? Whether it’s testing knowledge on music, films, or general trivia, a quiz can make the evening especially fun.
You could mix this in with other games such as bingo to add a fast-paced element. If you’re anything like us, you’ll probably want to do one of those virtual escape rooms or murder mystery packs you can get! Sounds like a great night in to me.
Prepare Comforting Food and Drink
If you’re not going to get a takeaway then a little focus on feeding your friends comforting dishes and snacks that are simple yet satisfying. Grazing boards, charcuterie spreads, and deli-style foods are all easy to prep and tend to be a popular choice, plus they suit a range of dietary requirements – heard of ‘bring a board’ night? They look fun!
Add a selection of finger foods, soups, or even a warming pasta bake to round out the menu. Offering a thoughtful selection of non-alcoholic beverages to go with your food selection ensures everyone feels included too. Herbal teas, mocktails, sparkling water infusions, or specialty coffees are all ideal options. For that extra cosy feeling, include hot chocolate too. This can be served with any puddings or sweet treats, such as cakes or biscuits.

Remember that a cosy night in is all about creating an atmosphere where guests feel at home. By focusing on these thoughtful details, you’ll create an evening that’s not only relaxing but also unforgettable.
