When we did our extension in 2018/2019, the finished product was not exactly what we’d envisioned, especially when it came to the floor. We were advised to have an oak engineered wood plank installed and let’s just say it all went horribly, horribly wrong. Do not recommend.
We finally came to an agreement with the builder that the whole floor would be replaced and opted for LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) flooring. Baring in mind we now had three children the floor needed to be durable, but also stylish. It had to fit in with the existing fixtures and colours because everything else had already been fitted and it 100% had to be low maintenance. No chance on this Earth would I be scrubbing on my hands and knees like a housemaid from times gone by.
While LVT is designed to withstand everyday wear and tear, keeping it clean and refreshed is essential to maintain its look and longevity. Luckily, there are several effective methods for cleaning LVT floors, ranging from traditional mop and bucket approaches to more modern steam and spray solutions. They do give you a little guide when it’s installed about the do’s and don’t’s but here’s what I’ve found works really well for me.
Get a cleaner to do it for you.
Just kidding. (But also not kidding if you can get one to do it properly!)
Mop and Bucket
A good old classic mop and bucket remains one of the most straightforward and effective ways to clean LVT floors. To get the best results:
- Use warm water and a mild, pH-neutral floor cleaner designed for LVT – some LVT suppliers all supply the proper ‘stuff’ or can give you a starter cleaning kid.
- Wring out the mop thoroughly to avoid excess water, as standing water can seep into the seams and cause damage over time. I cannot express to you enough how the mop just needs to be damp, and not completely sodden.
- Paying extra attention to high-traffic areas, I usually follow the grooves and will then go over a second time
- Rinse the mop frequently to avoid spreading dirt around, and change the water if it starts to look a bit minging, otherwise you’re just spreading more dirt.
- Finish by drying the floor with a microfibre cloth or allow it to air dry to prevent water spots – this works so much better in the summer when you can throw windows and doors open.
Avoid using harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners as they can strip the protective layer of the LVT and cause discolouration. I swear by the Vileda Spin Mop!
Spray Mop
A spray mop is a quick and convenient way to clean LVT flooring. I use mine most days for either spot cleaning or a quick going over in a smaller area of our kitchen/diner – usually around the table where one of the darling children have managed to drop a lump of Weetabix on the floor.
Most spray mops come with a refillable bottle for cleaning solutions and a microfibre pad that traps dirt and grime. I got a basic one, you really don’t need anything fancy! They’re ideal for regular cleaning because they don’t require large amounts of water, which helps protect the integrity of the LVT.
Steam Mop
While traditional steamers can sometimes be too harsh for LVT, modern steam mops designed for vinyl floors are an excellent option for deep cleaning. The key is to use a low or moderate steam setting to avoid overheating or damaging the adhesive layers beneath the planks.
- Choose a steam mop that is approved for LVT flooring.
- Use distilled water to prevent mineral buildup.
- Work in small sections, keeping the mop moving to prevent overheating any one spot.
- Allow the floor to dry naturally after steaming.
Steam mopping is particularly effective at removing stubborn grime, sticky residue, and bacteria without the need for chemicals.
I try and get the steamer on it once a month or so.
Specialist Cleaning Products
For tougher stains or regular maintenance, using a specialist LVT cleaner can help restore the original sheen and texture of the flooring. Many LVT manufacturers offer their own branded cleaners, which are specifically formulated to work with their products. We got our LVT from Karndean and they have their own specialist products which are designed to be used roughly once every 6 months.
- Follow the product instructions carefully, diluting if necessary.
- Apply the cleaner directly to the floor or onto a microfibre mop.
- Work in sections, ensuring even coverage.
- Buff the floor gently with a dry microfibre cloth to enhance the shine.
Specialist products are designed to break down dirt and grime while preserving the protective layer of the flooring, making them ideal for periodic deep cleaning.
General Maintenance Tips
- Sweep or hoover your LVT floors regularly to prevent dirt and debris from scratching the surface.
- Place doormats at entrances to reduce the amount of dirt tracked indoors.
- Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the floor—use protective pads under furniture legs otherwise it does/can get scratched
- Clean up spills promptly to prevent staining or water damage.
LVT flooring is designed to be low maintenance, but regular cleaning using the right methods will keep it looking its best for years to come. Whether you prefer the traditional mop and bucket, the convenience of a spray mop, the deep-cleaning power of a steamer, or the added protection of specialist cleaners, there’s a solution for every cleaning need.
With a little care and the right approach, your LVT floors will stay beautiful and durable for the long haul.
