We’ve lived in our house for almost 3 years now, and we’ve made a few changes since then. We gave most rooms a lick of paint when we moved in and that was about it until last year. In February 2015 we completely redid the kitchen. We knocked through into another room to turn it into a kitchen/diner, had brand new cupboards and tops, new flooring and ceilings and so on. Then towards the end of 2015 we decided to do our living room too. Out came the fireplace, on went the new wallpaper and in went the new carpet. These are the two rooms we spend most time in, and we wanted them to be inviting, fit for purpose and homely. There’s nothing like moving into a house and putting your own stamp on it. However, neither of them are actually finished – we still need to get pictures on the wall and the little bits that make a house a home.
The next rooms I really want to get done are the boy’s bedrooms and the family bathroom. I know exactly how I want the boys’ rooms but bathrooms seem to be difficult to get right! Ours is quite small; little floor space and just enough room to fit a 3 piece suite in there with a teeny tiny radiator on the wall. I don’t want anything that will encase the room, rather I’d prefer something that opened the room up as much as possible to make the most of the space we do have!
I’d love to go for something modern, slightly minimalist perhaps, but that’s probably not going to happen with two children and all their bath toys so I think I’ll have to settle for a practical and working bathroom, rather than the dream!
In terms of colours, I don’t want anything too vibrant or crazy, although I would love a splash of colour to set the room off nicely. Oh and storage, for all the toiletries I seem to have accumulated and can never seem to get rid of.
For the most part, and in lots of recent bathrooms I’ve seen, everyone keeps going with the top to bottom tile, but I just don’t think that’d work for us. I think a tiled area around the bath would be perfect, but otherwise I think a nice neutral coloured paint would, and could, work for us. I’d also love to fit in a nice wide mirror just to reflect some light around the room.
Equally, is it too much to ask for something that’s easy to clean? The previous owners have travertine tiles on the wall and floor which are a nightmare to clean; the mould just sits in any of the holes and I have to scrub so much to get it out! Either way, just look at some of the fab pictures of these bathrooms. I think a mix of all of these in a small space would be so good. I think it’s time to get saving!
