Review | Fisher-Price Silly Wheelie Mickey

With Christmas fast approaching, I have been on the hunt for some gifts for a two year old who basically has everything. Hard right? Wrong.

I was kindly asked to review the Silly Wheelie Mickey from Fisher-Price’s Disney collection of toys. Now, I have to be honest and so I’ll have to say that while I do love kids’ toys, I’ve never really been into Disney or Mickey, or anything that’s character based really. However, Toby is quite happy with anything and we did go through a phase of him watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (HOT-dog!) so I really wanted to see if he would play with this sort of toy. The only thing I’ll say now is that you HAVE to get this for your kids at Christmas.

Mickey pedals the bike as he’s riding, he’ll ride in silly circles, spin around and pull wheelies! There’s a flag on the back that he’ll ask you to catch, which I was a bit dubious about at first because Toby can be very heavy handed. He’s obsessed with carrying Mickey by the flag, although I’ve tried showing him to hold him up by his ears, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s a good, solid build and isn’t flimsy. You can tell it’s been manufactured to withstand a toddler with a firm grip as the flag is still in tact.. so far anyway!

It took Toby a while to work out how the Silly Wheelie Mickey worked and what he did, but once he’d sussed it out he was away having great fun chasing him around and pulling the flag. The best bit was finding Toby laughing because he’d crashed into our kitchen cupboard and had gotten stuck.

Silly Wheelie Mickey is quite a noisy toy; it’s on or off, one volume which can be a bit grating sometimes, but seeing Toby play with him makes it bearable. Mickey likes to sing, and it’s really catchy. I always find myself singing or saying the odd little phrases to myself as I’m going about my day. “Cycle spin spin, cycle spin spin” is on and “oh boy” is the other.

I really love that Mickey is colourful and an “active” toy. I like that on rainy days you can pop him on and run around the kitchen with him. I pretend to run away from him and Toby thinks this is brilliant while he’s also running around after Mickey, and me. It really encourages kids to be on the move, chasing after the flag and I like that by trying to grab the flag that it can help refine both Toby’s fine and gross motor skills.

Mickey works really well on a laminate floor but he can get a ‘little’ over excited with the spinning at times and he does fall over. He’s not great on carpet, but will go with a little push. There have been times where he’s been on carpet and he’s not been able to pedal forward and he just totally stops – initially I thought this was where the batteries might have been running out but it’s not. Mickey can get stuck, so you do need quite a big open space, as he can’t reverse out of.

By tapping the flag, you can change the direction of Mickey, and he’ll change the game and usually his position. He certainly loves to show off his “mouska moves”.

Mickey is suitable for ages 3+ but Toby is 2 and can quite happily use it and play with it. The Silly Wheelie Mickey by Fisher Price has an RRP of £31.99 is available from various retailers.
