Review | Andrew Barton Hair Care

With my hair getting longer it’s becoming increasingly difficult to control! It’s thick, frizzy and wavy – isn’t that just the best combination? It was a little thinner after two pregnancies, to the point where I looked as though I was going bald in a couple of places, but fear not, it’s growing back and some days I just don’t know how to contain it.

There are things that I’ve been trying to do to help control this bird nest of hair I have and trying to mix up my hair care products until I find the best combination is just one of them. The first thing I can not live without is conditioner. Because I have both colour and bleach on my hair, I literally can’t not put conditioner on it. If I don’t it ends up unbelievably knotty and feels terribly dry!

Andrew Barton Shampoo and Conditioner

Andrew Barton’s hair care products are available in Asda, and usually I’d opt for something that protects my colour, rather than something that attacks one of the other problems. This time I opted to go for this ‘Smooth That Frizz’ conditioner, and coupled it with the shampoo.

Now I have to admit I love my hair when it sits right, or dries the right way and all my natural waves and curls just happen for me that day but those days are few and far in between. There’s a difference between it looking lovely and natural, and then it verges on the edge of being an afro and trust me, that isn’t a good look on me; but I genuinely believe it’s very much down to the products I’m using and what I do with it after its been washed.

Andrew Barton’s products stand out superbly on the shelf. Their laminated bold colours and tubed packaging really did it for me. It looked professional and luxurious, totally high end. When I first tried it I loved the smell of both the shampoo and conditioner, but actually when I had been lathering it up for a couple of minutes it reminded me of a particular perfume I have on my shelf, but rarely use because I don’t like one small scent in it.

They’re quite peppery, if that makes sense, and although the smell isn’t an unpleasant one, it smelled better in the tube than it did when I was using it. Having said that, once I’d washed it out, my hair actually smelled really nice.

The shampoo and conditioner certainly gave my hair a little something. It felt different to the ones I’d been using prior to reviewing these and my hair felt somewhat lighter, but still sleek. Both products contain Moroccan argan oil and sweet almond oil and these work together to calm and hydrate the frizz whilst improving manageability all round. It certainly worked for me. After brushing my hair through I didn’t feel like I had any residue left, which is great, because I have found with other products that, due to the thickness of my hair, it can be really hard to wash out. Huge bonus!

Andrew Barton Gloss Serum

Now I don’t usually use a serum because I tend to find that a lot of them make my hair look greasy or wet, or they end up making my baby hairs static. However, I was still happy to try this one out after being pretty impressed with the shampoo and conditioner. Traditonally, all serums are used to defrizz and smooth, which is exactly what I need. However, lots of them are coming packed with additional benefits to keep hair looking healthy, lustrous and glossy. Serums are a great multi functional and easy to use hair care product if used properly. And this one has kind of become my new best friend.

This particular serum is great for thicker and coarser hair, it just seems to be that little bit thicker than the serums I’ve used in the past and it seems to hold onto my hair much better. I first applied this when my hair was wet to see if it would help tame my curls, and it did! And I know you guys have probably seen this picture before, but it just goes to show that a little of the right stuff goes a long way. I applied it to brushed, slightly damp hair and went to bed. I woke up like this;

I applied a little more serum in the morning just to catch any last fly away baby hairs, but I didn’t need to brush my nest or anything! Another reason I loved this serum is because it seems to have helped my split ends out massively. I don’t seem to have half as many as I usually do and the ends of my hairs don’t feel so dry either. Yay for a serum that actually works!

Andrew Barton Heat Protection Spray

A heat protection spray is something I tend to avoid. I don’t like them because they make my hair feel sticky and they always have a different smell to the shampoo and conditioner you’ve just used, and I’m always a bit gutted you can’t smell that, especially if it’s a nice one. But in a bid to keep my hair looking healthy, especially ahead of the wedding (eek!), I was actually quite looking forward to trying this. Typically, I try not to blow dry and straighten my hair if I can get away with it, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it.

I haven’t actually used this on damp hair and blow dried it yet, mostly because I’ve been enjoying the serum and my natural waves. However, there have been one or two days where I’ve had to cave just to look presentable. I’ve applied this to dry hair a couple of times, brushed it through and then gone on to straighten my hair.

It definitely makes an improvement, in that I feel my hair is much more protected from the heat, but I’ve not noticed that my colour has, or hasn’t, changed. I’ll definitely continue to use this to try and retain as much colour as I can, plus there’s nothing like that salon feel at home!

Andrew Barton hair products are available in Asda and are really reasonably priced too! I usually pay close to £5 for other hair products but these start much lower than that (around £3) and have been a dream for my hair!
